What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over a damaged or decayed tooth. It is designed to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are commonly used when a tooth is significantly weakened, has a large filling, or has undergone root canal treatment.
Why Consider a Dental Crown?
There are several reasons why a crown might be the right choice for you:
- Strength and Protection: They strengthen weakened teeth, help prevent further damage and protect against fractures.
- Aesthetic Improvement: If you have discoloured or misshapen teeth, it can improve your smile by providing a natural-looking finish that blends seamlessly with your existing teeth.
- Long-lasting Solution: With proper care, they can last many years, making them a durable option for tooth restoration.
- Versatile Application: They can be used to address various dental issues, such as repairing broken teeth, covering implants, or supporting bridges.
The Crown Procedure
Getting a crown typically involves two visits to our practice:
- Initial Consultation: We will assess your dental health and discuss your treatment options during your first visit. If a crown is deemed necessary, we will prepare the affected tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to fit the crown.
- Crown Placement: After taking impressions of your tooth, a temporary crown will be placed while your custom crown is made. Once your dental crown is ready, we will schedule a follow-up appointment to fit and cement the crown securely in place.
How to Care for Your Dental Crown
Caring for your crown is essential to ensure its longevity. Here are a few tips to maintain your crown:
- Practice good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing daily.
- Avoid sticky or hard foods that could damage the crown.
- Regular dental check-ups will help monitor the condition of your crown and overall dental health.
